Just a Shnibble

Buns, Beans, and Beyond

Made this weekend. Fantastic. Streusel topping was not as crumbly as described by author, but tasted just fine and cooked up nicely.

I made many many apple pies for a large-ish soirée about a month ago. Used a Williams-Sonoma pocket pie mold to make these darling little apple-shaped pies (I hear pocket pies are what’s hot on the streets these days). I used the dough recipe from Serious Eats with the usual GF flour mix and it worked marvelously!

This Christmas, Rachel and Julia had yet another stroke of brilliance! They realized what a good Clark family gathering needs is a poetry competition. The theme, they announced, would be “Ode to Beef Stroganoff.” Away their relatives skibbled to compose timeless works of poetic gold that fully captured their intensely passionate, yet profoundly complicated, feelings toward beef stroganoff. The results of their creative labor were nothing short of a Christmas miracle. While it was a reworking of that beloved holiday tune, Jingle Bells, that ultimately rose supreme, all the poems were undoubtedly of the highest caliber. All submissions can be found below, in the order they were presented by the judges.

Beef Stroganoff

Beefy joy!
Eminent among entrees
Entrancing, enchanting
Food for body and

Soul
Tantalizing dish of
Russian origin
Oh, how it brings my palate
Great euphoria
And appeases my growling belly
Noodles and succulent meat
Occurring in harmony with sauce and
Fungi, sustaining me, that
Formidable combatant of hunger

Ode to Beef Stroganoff
by the O’Callaghans

No box of Hamburger Helper for me,
What I have is an original recipe.

It hails from Russia, land of the czars,
Me likes mine that earns four stars.

Start with some mushrooms gathered from the forest floor,
It is forbidden to cheat with a trip to the grocery store.

Avoid ones that are orange, pink, or chartreuse,
This isn’t a dish you serve with chocolate mousse.

Large hunks of meat go into the pot,
You must keep stirring once it gets hot.

Throw in some shallots and saute until soft,
Some sour cream to finish and there’s the best stroganoff!

Stroganoffs
by Randy (inspired by Trees, by Joyce Kilmer)

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as beef stroganoff.
When the diner’s hungry mouth is pressed
Against the stroganoff’s sour creamy breast;
A stroganoff that looks at me all day,
And lifts its noodley arms to pray;
A stroganoff that may in summer wear
Julienned vegetables just like hair;
Upon whose bosom paprika has lain;
Which leads me to the last refrain:
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only Martha Stewart can make a beef stroganoff

Ode to Beef Stroganoff

Turkey is nice, but lasts all week
Roast goose is a dish I seldom seek
Boar’s head’s traditional but creepy
Blintzes always make me sleepy
    You’re better off
    with stroganoff

Tofu doesn’t fill the bill
Fondue makes me slightly ill
Christmas pudding’s mostly suet
Christmas cookies just don’t do it
    Need relief?

Stroganoff (to the tune of “Jingle Bells”)
by Betsy

Wholesome, yummy beef
In a warm and creamy sauce
How I love to eat
Beef stroganoff (off off off!)
Mushrooms and pasta bring
A flavor that’s just right
What fun it is to laugh and eat
Beef stroganoff tonight

Oh, stroganoff, stroganoff,
Beefy all the way
It’s such a thrill to eat my fill
of stroganoff each day!
Stroganoff, stroganoff
Beefy all the way
It’s such a thrill to eat my fill
of stroganoff each day!

A day or two ago
I thought I’d have a bite
Soon all my relatives
Were sitting by my side
They each had just a shnibble
Which turned into a lot
My aunts ate all my stroganoff
And I was so upsot

Oh, stroganoff, stroganoff,
Beefy all the way
It’s such a thrill to eat my fill
of stroganoff each day!
Stroganoff, stroganoff
Beefy all the way
It’s such a thrill to eat my fill
of stroganoff each day!

This is manaqish bil zaatar, which is a fancy way of saying flatbread with dried herbs. We cheated and used a chebe mix for the bread. We topped a few of them with cheese and gobbled them all up in minutes.

The Elliotts put their new ice cream maker to good use with this coffee chip ice cream. Made with strong, fresh espresso, it could even be a very sugary, very Clark breakfast.
